Marciniak, Marta. 2017. Inna droga życia : niedokończona historia punka w Warszawie i na Górnym Śląsku. Pyskowice: ZIMA Firma Fonograficzno-Handlowa. [ML3534.6 .P7 M37 2017]
To wszystko oferuje punk rock.
Broad, Leah. 2023. Quartet : How Four Women Challenged the Musical World. London: Faber and Faber. [ML82 .B76 2023Y]
Ethel Smyth (b.1858): Famed for her operas, this trailblazing queer Victorian composer was a larger-than-life socialite, intrepid traveller and committed Suffragette. Rebecca Clarke (b.1886): This talented violist and Pre-Raphaelite beauty was one of the first women ever hired by a professional orchestra, later celebrated for her modernist experimentation. Dorothy Howell (b.1898): A prodigy who shot to fame at the 1919 Proms, her reputation as the ‘English Strauss’ never dented her modesty; on retirement, she tended Elgar’s grave alone. Doreen Carwithen (b.1922): One of Britain’s first woman film composers who scored Elizabeth II’s coronation film, her success hid a 20-year affair with her married composition tutor. In their time, these women were celebrities. They composed some of the century’s most popular music and pioneered creative careers; but today, they are ghostly presences, surviving only as muses and footnotes to male contemporaries like Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Britten – until now. Leah Broad’s magnificent group biography resurrects these forgotten voices, recounting lives of rebellion, heartbreak and ambition, and celebrating their musical masterpieces. Lighting up a panoramic sweep of British history over two World Wars, Quartet revolutionises the canon forever.
Eisenberg, Andrew J. 2024. Sounds of Other Shores : The Musical Poetics of Identity on Kenya’s Swahili Coast. Middletown, Connecticut: Wesleyan University Press. [ML3503 .K46 E47 2024X]
Swahili taarab, a form of sung poetry that emerged as East Africa's first mass-mediated popular music in the 1930s, is a famously cosmopolitan form, rich in audible influences from across the Indian Ocean. But the variants of the genre that emerged in the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa during the twentieth century feature particularly dramatic, even flamboyant, appropriations of Indian and Arab sonic gestures and styles. Combining oral history, interpretive ethnography, and musical analysis, Sounds of Other Shores explores how Swahili-speaking Muslims in twentieth-century Mombasa derived pleasure and meaning from acts of transoceanic musical appropriation. The result is a musical anthropology of Kenyan Swahili subjectivity that reframes the longstanding questions about Swahili identity while contributing to broader discussions about identity and citizenship in Africa and the Indian Ocean world.
Veal, Michael E. 2024. Living Space : John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Free Jazz, from Analog to Digital. Middletown, Connecticut: Wesleyan University Press. [ML3506 .V4 2024X]
Living Space: John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Free Jazz, from Analog to Digital fuses biography and style history in order to illuminate the music of two jazz icons, while drawing on the discourses of photography and digital architecture to fashion musical insights that may not be available through the traditional language of jazz analysis. The book follows the controversial trajectories of two jazz legends, emerging from the 1959 album Kind of Blue. Coltrane's odyssey through what became known as "free jazz" brought stylistic (r)evolution and chaos in equal measure. Davis's spearheading of "jazz-rock fusion" opened a door through which jazz's ongoing dialogue with the popular tradition could be regenerated, engaging both high and low ideas of creativity, community, and commerce.
Diao, Ying. 2023. Faith by Aurality in China’s Ethnic Borderland : Media, Mobility, and Christianity at the Margins. Rochester: University of Rochester Press. [ML3187 .D56 2023X]
Illuminates how voice, faith, and hearing become intertwined with technologies of sound reproduction and mobility amid the rapidly transforming religious landscape of China's ethnic borderland. The twentieth-century expansion of Protestantism among the upland peoples in the China-Southeast Asia borderlands has catalyzed a profound sociocultural change in the region. In Faith by Aurality in China's Ethnic Borderland, Ying Diao finds important sonic evidence for this religious revolution in the rapidly transforming region of northwest Yunnan, presenting a compelling account of the region's Christian minority and highlighting the importance of aurality in this group's response to Christianity and other modernizing projects. Diao documents a range of sounded religious practices by the Lisu, an indigenous yet historically migratory people, to examine how participatory music production, circulation, and consumption become integral to indigenous perception and experience of faith. Weaving together evidence from multisite fieldwork, archival records, and audiovisual media, Diao demonstrates a nuanced understanding of people of faith at the margins, one centered on the sensual and material dimensions of religion and on the intertwining of local agency and external hegemonic forces. The resulting book provides historical and contextual information that enriches anthropological, ethnomusicological, and historical scholarship on global Christianity while showing how sound can be an ambivalent but fruitful avenue through which ways of faith are constructed in a context where religion remains voiceless.
Cavanagh, David. 2023. The Creation Records Story : My Magpie Eyes Are Hungry for the Prize. London: Faber & Faber. [ML3792 .C74 C39 2023Y]
My Magpie Eyes Are Hungry for the Prize tells the uncensored story of Creation Records. Founded by Alan McGee in 1983, the label achieved notoreity as the home of bands including Primal Scream, The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and Teenage Fanclub. During the Britpop boom of the mid-nineties, the astonishing success of Oasis brought Creation fame on the world stage. In 1999, however, McGee announced his shock departure as his label's influence over a generation of British music came to an abrupt end. Unavailable for many years, the book has gained almost mythical status. Containing interviews with Creation musicians, employees, supporters and detractors, this is the inside story of an iconic record label -- and a defining era of twentieth-century British music.
Fahrenkrog Cianelli, Laura. 2020.
Jones, Margaret, and Loretta. Lynn. 2023. The Life and Times of Patsy Cline. Nashville, TN: Country Music Foundation Press. [ML420 .C57 J66 2023Y]
The riveting and heart-wrenching story of country music diva Patsy Cline, from her against-all-odds rise from poverty and a strange, lonely childhood shrouded in secrecy, to her tragic and untimely death at the age of thirty when, ironically, she had finally achieved the triumph she sought all her life.
Chiesa, Laura, ed. 2024. Resonances against Fascism : Modernist and Avant-Garde Sounds from Kurt Weill to Black Lives Matter. Albany, NY: State University of New York Press. [ML3916 .R468 2024X]
Resonances against Fascism explores some of the myriad ways music and, more broadly, sound have emerged from, and been mobilized to address, the urgencies of the present, from modernism to today. Taking the works and life of the German-born composer Kurt Weill as a pivotal point of departure, the collection brings together a range of critical voices, each with a singular tone, to demonstrate the pervasive force of sound in the face of fascism. Across eight essays, contributors sound out the anti-authoritarian resonances of modernist and avant-garde aesthetics from Weill to Nina Simone and Chico Buarque, to Marguerite Duras and Jean-Luc Godard, to Lou Reed and Patti Smith, and to the choral chants of the Black Lives Matter Movement. The second volume in the Humanities to the Rescue book series, a public humanities project dedicated to discussing the role of the arts and humanities today, Resonances against Fascism takes its cue from the disruptive force of music in traversing the boundaries between—and engaging readers from—modernist and avant-garde studies, critical and cultural theory, musicology and sound studies, critical race and gender studies, performance studies, and philosophy.
