Alexander, Paul. 2024. Bitter Crop : The Heartache and Triumph of Billie Holiday’s Last Year. New York: Alfred A. Knopf. [ML420 .H58 A74 2024X]
In the first biography of Billie Holiday in more than two decades, Paul Alexander—author of heralded lives of Sylvia Plath and J. D. Salinger—gives us an unconventional portrait of arguably America’s most eminent jazz singer. He shrewdly focuses on the last year of her life—with relevant flashbacks to provide context—to evoke and examine the persistent magnificence of Holiday’s artistry when it was supposed to have declined, in the wake of her drug abuse, relationships with violent men, and run-ins with the law. During her lifetime and after her death, Billie Holiday was often depicted as a down-on-her-luck junkie severely lacking in self-esteem. Relying on interviews with people who knew her, and new material unearthed in private collections and institutional archives, Bitter Crop—a reference to the last two words of Strange Fruit, her moving song about lynching—limns Holiday as a powerful, ambitious woman who overcame her flaws to triumph as a vital figure of American popular music.
Ayobade, Dotun. 2024. Queens of Afrobeat : Women, Play, and Fela Kuti’s Music Rebellion. Bloomington, Indiana: Indiana University Press. [ML410 .F2955 A96 2024X]
In Queens of Afrobeat, the women of Afrobeat music—a unique blend of jazz, soul, highlife, and West African rhythms—are finally given the recognition they deserve. This extensive study takes a multifaceted view of the storied lives of the women behind Fela Kuti's activist music. Dotun Ayobade's wide-ranging research pulls from interviews with surviving queens, ethnographic narratives, the exploration of newspaper archives, and close readings of album covers, photographs, and promotional materials to help us see and understand the women who surrounded Fela Kuti on stage and in everyday life. Not only were these artists crucial performers and backup singers for Kuti's most important compositions, they also played key roles in his activism and campaigns of social protest against the Nigerian government in the 1970s. Drawing on previously untapped material, Queens of Afrobeat weaves together an intricate narrative of women's participation in popular music. The stories of these remarkable women transform and uniquely personalize our understanding of the politics and performance of one of the major modern musical traditions in Africa
Favoretto, Mara. 2024. Coded Lyrics : The Poetics of Argentine Rock under Censorship and Beyond. Liverpool: Liverpool University Press. [ML3534.6 .A7 F38 2024Y]
Coded Lyrics is the first comprehensive academic work dedicated to unraveling the lyrical intricacies of Argentine rock in the English language. This book redefines the narrative of rock history, shedding light on the distinctive journey undertaken by South American rock music amidst a unique set of contextual challenges, far removed from its English-speaking counterparts. Within this vibrant musical landscape, Argentine rock emerges as a shining example of cultural resistance in the region. Focusing intently on Argentina's tumultuous authoritarian decades and the post-dictatorship era, this book delves deep into the heart of the Argentine rock genre's lyrical content. It vividly portrays the ongoing struggle between the state and the public, where identity, language, and perception converge around the powerful medium of rock music. Coded Lyrics is not a conventional musicological study; instead, it serves as a meticulous exploration of language and culture. With captivating prose, the book unravels the genesis of Argentine rock, placing language at its epicentre. Through a thorough examination of rock lyrics, this work unveils the artful manipulation of language as a vehicle for resistance. It illuminates the unexpected consequences of censorship in Argentina, with Argentine rock lyrics standing as a compelling testament to the transformative power of art in the face of totalitarianism.
Sol, Manuel del. 2021.
Perman, Tony, and Stefan Patrick Fiol, eds. 2024. Music Making Community. Urbana: University of Illinois Press. [ML3916 .M8757 2024X]
Making music offers enormous possibilities--and faces significant limitations--in its power to generate belonging and advance social justice. Tony Perman and Stefan Fiol edit essays focused on the forms of interplay between music-making and community-making as mutually creative processes. Contributors in the first section look at cases where music arrived in settings with little or no sense of community and formed social bonds that lasted beyond its departure. In the sections that follow, the essayists turn to stable communities that used musical forms to address social needs and both forged new social groups and, in some cases, splintered established communities. By centering the value of difference in productive feedback dynamics of music and community while asserting the need for mutual moral indebtedness, they foreground music's potential to transform community for the better.
Oviedo, Álvaro, Jean-Paul Olive, and Márta Grabócz, eds. 2020. György Kurtág : les œuvres et leurs interprétations. Paris: Hermann. [ML410 .K9775 G965 2020]
Rocking Islam : Music and the Making of New Muslim Identities. Münster: Waxmann. [ML3921.6 .I85 R683]
Music has the universal power to move individuals, peoples and societies. Music is one of the most important signifiers of cultural change. It is also most significant for youth movements and youth cultures. While Islam has a historically and traditionally rich culture of music, religious controversy on the topic of music is still ongoing. However, young Muslims in today's globalised world seek pop cultural tools such as music, and particularly hip hop music, as way of exploring and expressing their manifold identities, whilst challenging Islamophobia, stigma and racism on the one hand and traditional and religious challenges on the other hand. In this volume, following an international conference with the same title, scholars and young academics from a variety of disciplines seek to explore and highlight the phenomena surrounding the two, somewhat artificially separated, realms of music and religion. The contributions not only look into different genres of music, from Tunisian metal over German female hip hop to Egyptian folk, but take the reader on a journey from continent to countries to cities and rural areas and thus give space and time to a widely neglected area of research: that of Muslim popular culture and young Muslims.
Zouhar, Vít. 2022. Bohuslav Martinů & Miloslav Bureš : 1955-1959. Olomouc: Univerzita Palackého v Olomouci. [ML410 .M382 Z69 2022]
The book describes the creative relationship between the composer Bohuslav Martinů and the poet Miloslav Bureš. It explains their cooperation in the second half of the 1950s, the creation of the cantatas Opening of the Springs, Romance of Dandelions, Legend of the Smoke of potato nati and Mikeš of the Mountains, but also their unrealized plans. It brings a new perspective on the context of the period. The publication is published in a Czech-English mirror edition.
Rollins, Sonny. 2024. The Notebooks of Sonny Rollins. New York: New York Review Books. [ML419 .R64 A3 2024X]
Sonny Rollins is one of the towering masters of American music, a virtuoso of the saxophone, and an unequaled improviser whose live performances are legendary and who has reshaped modern jazz time and time again over the course of a career lasting more than sixty years. A turning point in that legendary career came in 1959, when Rollins stepped back from performing and recording to begin a new regime of musical exploration, which saw him practicing for hours, sometimes all through the night, on the Williamsburg Bridge. This was also the moment when he started the notebook that would become a trusted companion in years to come—not a diary so much as a place to ponder art and life and his own search for meaning in words and in images. At once quotidian and aphoristic, the notebooks mingle lists of chores and rehearsal routines with ruminations on nightclub culture, racism, and the conundrums of the inner life. And always there is the music—questions of embouchure, fingering, and technique; of harmony and dissonance; of his own and others’ art and the art of jazz. “Any definition,” Rollins insists, “which seeks to separate Johann Sebastian Bach from Miles Davis is defeating its own purpose of clarification. . . .The Musings of Miles is then the Bouncing of Bach both played against each other.” Edited and introduced by the critic and jazz scholar Sam V.H. Reese, The Notebooks of Sonny Rollins provides an unequaled glimpse into the mind and workshop of a musical titan, as well as a wealth of insight and inspiration to readers.
