Renovations on the first floor of the Music Library began on Tuesday, July 9, 2024. The renovations are nearly complete and the library continues to be open during this time. We appreciate your patience.

We thought that you might have questions so have created this post to help answer them as best we can. If you have any specific concerns you can stop by our circulation desk, and we’d be happy to help. We will continue to update this blog post until the refresh is complete to keep you up to date with the latest information.

Most of the updates are complete:

  • Walls painted
  • Carpet laid
  • Circulation desk shortened and back in operation
  • Computer access restored

Our reference shelves should be back in operation early next week and most of our new furniture has arrived.

FAQs

Am I be able to study on the first floor?

Yes. There will still be some noise as we finish up renovations, so if you need a quieter space to study, we have space on the lower level of the library as well. If you require elevator access to the lower level, please inquire at the circulation desk.

Can I still get materials?

Yes! You are still able to access our regular shelving throughout the renovation. If there’s anything you’re having trouble finding, come by to ask one of our staff. Some of our materials (A-ML128 range) are not readily accessible to browse during this time, but are still accessible on request. Please ask us for assistance retrieving these items. We will be happy to help!

Is the Harvey Olnick Reading Room available?

Yes. The reading room is available for consulting archival materials and items in our rare books collection. Please email our archivist Becky Shaw (r.shaw@utoronto.ca) if you have any questions or would like to request access to these collections.

Is the study room available?

Not yet. Our study room will be bookable starting next week. If you need assistance finding a quiet place to study during this time, please ask at the circulation desk.

Are the computers available?

Most of our computers have been reinstalled. They are in 3 locations: the old listening room beside the circulation desk (10 machines); 1 stand-up machine at the circulation desk (temporary); 1 downstairs by the study carrels. Apart from the temporary machine at the circulation desk, all terminals require UTORid login (i.e. no free public access). If you require assistance locating computer, please ask at the circulation desk.

Will there be much dust and noise?

Most of the loud work is planned to be done early in the day; however, there will be times when it’s loud throughout the day. It should be quieter on the lower level of the library.

Are you done yet?

Good question! We are working hard to finish up the refresh as soon as possible, and we're nearly there! Thank you for your continued patience as we finish up this project.

What changes will there be?

With the renovations, we will have more spaces for studying, more comfortable seating, and an update to our circulation desk and entryway. We will also be adding in a screen and sound bar to our workshop area so that we can finally have slideshows and videos to accompany workshops and presentations. See the photos below for the affected areas (before renovations started, and as of September 3, 2024).
