Asai, Susan Miyo. 2024. Sounding Our Way Home : Japanese American Musicking and the Politics of Identity. Jackson: University Press of Mississippi. [ML3917 .U6 A835 2024Y]
A product of twenty-five years of archival and primary research, Sounding Our Way Home: Japanese American Musicking and the Politics of Identity narrates the efforts of three generations of Japanese Americans to reach "home" through musicking. Using ethnomusicology as a lens, Susan Miyo Asai examines the musical choices of a population that, historically, is considered outside the racial and ethnic boundaries of American citizenship. Emphasizing the notion of national identity and belonging, the volume provokes a discussion about the challenges of nation-building in a democratic society. Asai addresses the politics of music, interrogating the ways musicking functions as a performance of social, cultural, and political identification for Japanese Americans in the United States. Musicking is an inherently political act at the intersection of music, identity, and politics, particularly if it involves expressing one's ethnicity and/or race. Asai further investigates how Japanese American ethnic identification and cultural practices relate to national belonging. Musicking cultivates a narrative of a shared history and aesthetic between performers and listeners. The discourse situates not only Japanese Americans, but all Asians into the black/white binary of race relations in the United States. Sounding Our Way Home contributes to the ongoing struggle for acceptance and equal representation for people of color in the US. A history of Japanese American musicking across three generations, the book unveils the social and political discrimination that nonwhite immigrants and their offspring continue to face when it comes to finding acceptance in US society and culture.
Costal, Anna, Joaquim Rabaseda, and Joan Gay. 2023. Les primeres havaneres a Catalunya : imperialisme i sensualitat abans de Carmen. Barcelona: Rafael Dalmau, Editor. [ML3498.7.C38 C67 2023Y]
Broyles, Michael. 2024. Revolutions in American Music : Three Decades That Changed a Country and Its Sounds. New York: W. W. Norton & Company. [ML200 .B76 2024Y]
The story of how unexpected connections between music, technology, and race across three tumultuous decades changed American culture. How did a European social dance craze become part of an American presidential election? Why did the recording industry become racially divided? Where did rock ’n’ roll really come from? And how do all these things continue to reverberate in today’s world? In Revolutions in American Music, award-winning author Michael Broyles shows the surprising ways in which three key decades—the 1840s, the 1920s, and the 1950s—shaped America’s musical future. Drawing connections between new styles of music like the minstrel show, jazz, and rock ’n’ roll, and emerging technologies like the locomotive, the first music recordings, and the transistor radio, Broyles argues that these decades fundamentally remade our cultural landscape in enduring ways. At the same time, these connections revealed racial fault lines running through the business of music, in an echo of American society as a whole. Through the music of each decade, we come to see anew the social, cultural, and political fabric of the time. Broyles combines broad historical perspective with an eye for the telling detail and presents a variety of characters to serve as focal points, including the original Jim Crow, a colorful Hungarian dancing master named Gabriel de Korponay, “Empress of the Blues” Bessie Smith, and the singer Johnnie Ray, whom Tony Bennett called “the father of rock ’n’ roll.” Their stories, and many others, animate Broyles’s masterly account of how American music became what it is today.
Brown, Jeffrey Arlo. 2023. The Life and Music of Gérard Grisey : Delirium and Form. Rochester: University of Rochester Press. [ML410 .G923 B76 2023X]
The first biography of the composer Gérard Grisey shows how the artist's sensuality and rigor came together to form the musical genre known as spectralism. The French composer Gérard Grisey (1946-98) changed the course of music history with his small but potent output. Labeled "spectral" music, his compositions looked to the physics of sound and the capacities of human perception for material and inspiration. Born in Belfort, Grisey was the son of a French Resistance veteran turned car mechanic and a homemaker. His first instrument was as humble as his background: the accordion. But Grisey rose from his provincial background to the heights of his profession. This first biography of Grisey traces his journey from rigid Catholicism to broader mysticism; his studies in Olivier Messiaen's legendary composition class; the development of the first "spectral" works in the 1970s; Grisey's stint teaching at the University of California at Berkeley, which brought him to the brink of suicide; the development of his late, post-spectral style; and his untimely death at the age of 52, shortly after completing his masterpiece on death, the Four Songs for Crossing the Threshold. Drawing on original archival research, interviews with more than fifty of Grisey's colleagues, friends, and lovers, and the study of previously overlooked sketches, this biography shows the delirium and form at the heart of Grisey's life and art-the structured sensuality that allowed him to revolutionize the music of the twentieth century.
Ellis, John Steven. 2024. The Pedagogical Writings of Marguerite Long : A Reassessment of Her Impact on the French School of Piano. Bloomington, Indiana: Indiana University Press. [ML417 .L85 E55 2024X]
Marguerite Long, the most important French female pianist of the 20th century, left her stamp on a whole epoch of musical life in Paris. The Pedagogical Writings of Marguerite Long presents English translations of the two major contributions of Marguerite Long to the literature of piano pedagogy. These translations of her pedagogical works, Le Piano and La Petite Méthode de piano, provide a window to the old French school of pianism as modernized by Long. Le Piano is a remarkable text offering piano playing techniques and pragmatic and philosophical musings and observations about life, musicians, careers, and more. La Petite Méthode de piano is a personal manifesto about how to introduce children to music. Both works are treasures revealing Long's lifelong commitment to teaching and they are still stunningly relevant. In addition, John Ellis analyzes each work and puts it in historical context. He places special emphasis on Long's illustrious international career, her teaching, her rivalry with Alfred Cortot, and the impact of sexism on her life and work. Ellis addresses the eclipse of Long's reputation by that of Cortot and fills a gap in the knowledge of Long's place in the history of pedagogical heritage.
Grabócz, Márta, ed. 2021. Narratologie musicale : topiques, théories et stratégies analytiques. Paris: Hermann. [ML3797 .N267 2021]
