Book coverMinton, John. 2024. Folk Music and Song in the WPA Ex-Slave Narratives. Jackson: University Press of Mississippi. [ML3556 .M57 2024X]

Between 1937 and 1940 fieldworkers in the Works Progress Administration's Federal Writers' Project interviewed around 3,500 formerly enslaved people in North America, resulting in roughly 20,000 pages of still unedited and inadequately indexed typescript. These accounts-the WPA ex-slave narratives-are the most substantial collection by far of folklore and oral history gathered directly from enslaved people in America. It is arguably the single greatest body of African American folklore extant, and a significant portion is devoted to folk music and song. This book considers this treasure trove in all its relevant social, cultural, and historical contexts. Nineteenth-century Black folk music developed against the backdrop of North American slavery, the American Civil War, Emancipation, the Federal occupation of the South, and a successful white supremacist paramilitary and political insurgency that led to Federal withdrawal, officially sanctioned racial terror, and Southern apartheid. The WPA ex-slave narratives describe that history in remarkable detail. Despite their inestimable value, most of the ex-slave narratives remained unpublished until the late 1970s, being almost unknown except to folklorists. Even after publication, the collection's sheer size was a barrier. Quoting extensively from the narratives and exhaustively annotated and indexed, this volume provides readers with detailed explanations and full references for every musical item or tradition featured in the ex-slave narratives. John Minton covers instrumental music and social dancing, spirituals and hymns, singing games and lullabies, ring plays and reels, worksongs, minstrel songs, ballads, war songs, slavery laments, and much, much more. Written for both specialists and general readers, with 134 illustrations, the book also offers a general overview of the ex-slave narratives, their contents, creation, and relation to the field of African American folklore as a whole.

Book coverPiana, Romain. 2024.

Book coverAdorno, Theodor W. 2025. Lectures 1949-1968. Volume 1, Music, Literature and the Arts. Edited by Michael Schwarz. Translated by Nicholas Walker. Cambridge: Polity Press. [ML423 .A33 V6713 2025Y]

When Theodor W. Adorno returned to Germany from his exile in the United States, he was appointed as a lecturer and researcher at the University of Frankfurt and he immediately made a name for himself as a leading public intellectual. Adorno's widespread influence on the postwar debates was due in part to the public lectures he gave outside of the university in which he analysed and commented on social, cultural and political developments of the time. This first volume brings together Adorno's lectures given between 1949 and 1968 on music, literature and the arts. With an engaging and improvisational style, Adorno spoke with compelling enthusiasm on subjects as diverse as Marcel Proust's prose, Richard Strauss's composition technique and Arnold Schoenberg's Pierrot lunaire. Germany, restoring its social and intellectual institutions, needed to embrace the new music and writers who had been neglected, particularly with regards to Proust. To rebuild was taken to mean rediscovery, but Adorno also nurtured a vision of tradition which - far from being unthinkingly conservative - would attest to society's honestly-appraised relationship to the past while it underwent the process of modernization. The volume illustrates Adorno's deep commitment to holding contemporary music and culture to standards commensurate with the aspirations of a modern world emerging from the horrors of war. This volume of his lectures is a unique document of Adorno's startling ability to bring critical theory into dialogue with the times in which he lived. It will be of great value to anyone interested in the work of Adorno and critical theory, in German intellectual and cultural history and in the history of modern music and the arts.

Book coverWagner, Minna, and Cäcilie Avenarius. 2021. Und über allem schwebt Richard : Minna Wagner und Cäcilie Avenarius : zwei Schwägerinnen im Briefwechsel. Edited by Martin Geck. Hildesheim: Georg Olms Verlag. [ML429 .W1345 A4 2021X]

Book coverMendenhall, Margaret Ann. 2025. Vox Eurydice : The Ascent of the Female Rescuer in German-Language Opera. Lanham: Lexington Books. [ML1700 .M43 2025X]

Vox Eurydice: The Ascent of the Female Rescuer in German-Language Opera is a mythological and depth psychological analysis written from a feminist perspective, on the emergence of the theme of rescue stories, and specifically plots where a female heroine saves a male character, which arose in German-language opera during the roughly one hundred years that spanned the lifetimes of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven and Richard Wagner. Margaret Ann Mendenhall argues that the German-language works of these three musical giants grew out of the rescue story paradigm, as an extension of Italian opera buffa and French opéra comique. This is reflected in Mozart’s Singspiele and Beethoven’s one completed opera, Fidelio, considered the epitome of the German-language rescue opera. The author then examines Wagner’s oeuvre, not only his ten mature masterpieces, but also three earlier operas and his unfinished pieces. The author also posits that the need for the ascent of the female rescuer in German-language opera was unconsciously tied into the desire of the people of the German-speaking territories for a homeland, and how the presence of this archetype subsided soon after a German nation was established in 1871.

Book coverLe Gendre, Kevin. 2024. Children of the Ghetto : Black Music in Britain. Volume 2. Leeds: Peepal Tree. [ML3492 .L44 2024Y]

Volume 2, Children of the Ghetto, covers the period from the late 1960s through to the end of the 1980s, explores the points of transition from the playing of Black musics in Britain that originated elsewhere to the emergence of an indigenously Black British music that responded to the situation of being born, or at least growing up in Britain, of the experience of the virulent racism in schools and in the wider society when, after Enoch Powell’s ‘rivers of blood’ speech, dockers marches and the regrouping of racist and fascist organisations, both white xenophobes and Black settlers realised the latter were here to stay. Le Gendre sees the emergence of the ‘homegrown’ in the blending of Caribbean rhythms, R&B and pop in the songs of The Equals (and the solo work of Eddy Grant), the jazz-blues-rock concoctions of C.C.S and the unique ‘Zion funk’ of Cymande. Also exciting is the British take on West African music offered by Osibisa, as well as the wide range of British reggae covered by Dennis Bovell, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Steel Pulse, Misty In Roots, Aswad and the great Lovers Rock queens, Louisa Marks ad Janet Kay. Then there is the experimental music of racially mixed groups such as Rip, Rig & Panic and I-Level. As for Joan Armatrading and Linda Lewis they made their mark by blending soul, folk and pop, while in jazz South Africans such as Julian Bahula and the Londoner of Jamaican descent, Courtney Pine also ushered in change. Furthermore, the book considers the impact of gatekeepers such as the BBC on Black musics as well as the opportunities and limitations offered by clubs and other venues. Above all, there is a detailed examination of why the songs of the aforementioned artists still resonate today, and an insight into the strong political statements of African and Caribbean lyric writers who spoke for their peers up and down the country, letting the world know that the children of the ghetto were coming of age.

Book coverKönig, Karl. 2024. Music Therapy : Research and Insights. Edited by Katarina Seeherr. Edinburgh: Floris Books. [ML3920 .K66 2024Y]

Music therapy helps to support individuals' mental and emotional lives through therapeutic exercises that utilize a variety of musical elements. Drawing on the work of Rudolf Steiner, Karl König, a pioneer of various forms of therapy within the Camphill movement, developed the basics of an anthroposophical music therapy, focusing on the fundamentals of music and how they connect to human beings. This fascinating book brings together König's lectures, essays and notes on music therapy, most of which have never before been published. In them he explores areas such as studies on hearing, the nature of musical experience, and the role of music in Camphill and music therapy for those with impaired hearing. Alongside the original writings, an in-depth introduction by music therapist Katarina Seeherr explores the evolution of König's ideas relating to music and music therapy and how he inspired many musicians and therapists to develop this form of therapy.

Book coverDozena, Alessandro. 2024. Geografias sonoras. Rio de Janeiro: Mórula. [ML3917 .B6 D694 2024]

Book coverJackson, Maurice. 2024. Rhythms of Resistance and Resilience : How Black Washingtonians Used Music and Sports in the Fight for Equality. Washington, DC: Georgetown University Press. [ML200.8 .W3 J33 2024X]

In the nation's capital, music and sports have always played a central role in the lives of African Americans and have often served as a barometer for social conflict and social progress. Sports clubs and ball games, jam sessions and concerts, have served to entertain and to enlighten; to encourage, and to at times offer a means of escape from the harsh realities of everyday life. Along the way many Black people have used their skills and their determination to learn and develop their crafts in music and sports to earn meaningful careers by using their creative genius to improve their lot, to cope with day to day racism, to be a credit to their communities, and to bring joy to those who watched them perform their craft. In this book Maurice Jackson tells the story of these musicians and athletes. He begins with pioneers such as Will Marion Cook, who formed the first musicians' union in the city and fought as a member of the Harlem Hellfighters in World War I. Jackson takes the story down to giants of the twentieth century like John Thompson, Jr. After winning the NCAA basketball championship as coach of the Georgetown Hoyas, Thompson said, "I'm not interested in being the first or only black coach to do anything, because that implies that I'm also the first with the ability." Jackson shows that Thompson stands in a long line of Black athletes and musicians who found in sports and music spaces to combat racial prejudice and bring people in the District together.

Book coverMiller, Douglas K. 2025. Washita Love Child : The Rise of Indigenous Rock  Star Jesse Ed Davis. New York: Liveright Publishing Corporation. [ML419 .D389 M55 2025Y]

No one played like Jesse Ed Davis. One of the most sought-after guitarists of the late 1960s and '70s, Davis appeared alongside the era's greatest stars--John Lennon and Mick Jagger, B.B. King and Bob Dylan--and contributed to dozens of major releases, including numerous top-ten albums and singles, and records by artists as distinct as Johnny Cash, Taj Mahal, and Cher. But Davis, whose name has nearly disappeared from the annals of rock and roll history, was more than just the most versatile session guitarist of the decade. A multitalented musician who paired bright flourishes with soulful melodies, Davis transformed our idea of what rock music could be and, crucially, who could make it. At a time when few other Indigenous artists appeared on concert stages, radio waves, or record store walls, in a century often depicted as a period of decline for Native Americans, Davis and his Kiowa, Comanche, Cheyenne, Seminole, and Mvskoke relatives demonstrated new possibilities for Native people. Weaving together more than a hundred interviews with Davis's bandmates, family members, friends, and peers--among them Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, and Robbie Robertson--Washita Love Child powerfully reconstructs Davis's extraordinary life and career, taking us from his childhood in Oklahoma to his first major gig backing rockabilly star Conway Twitty, and from his dramatic performance at George Harrison's 1971 Concert for Bangladesh to his years with John Trudell and the Grafitti Man band. In Davis's story, a post-Beatles Lennon especially emerges as a kindred soul and creative partner. Yet Davis never fully recovered from Lennon's sudden passing, meeting his own tragic demise just eight years later. With a foreword by former poet laureate Joy Harjo, who collaborated with Davis near the end of his life, Washita Love Child thoroughly and finally restores the "red dirt boogie brother" to his rightful place in rock history, cementing his legacy for generations to come.
